The Architecture of Monastic Ordinariness

I just sit with the image of someone living that life fully, day after day, not for insight experiences or spiritual narratives, but because that’s the life they stepped into.
The ache in my back fades slightly. Or maybe I just stop paying attention to it. Hard to tell. I sit for a moment longer, knowing that my presence here is tied to a click here larger world of practice, to monasteries waking up on the other side of the world, to bells and bowls and quiet footsteps that continue whether I’m inspired or confused. That thought is not a solution, but it is a reliable friend to have while sitting in the 2 a.m. silence.
